Lantern roof extensions are a modern re-invention of the traditional ‘Orangery’
The name ‘Orangery’ has been adopted by the conservatory industry, and refers to a design which has a solid flat roof with a glass lantern set within it.
Unlike the traditional orangery which is a free standing building set within the grounds of large residences, lantern roof designs are a great way to extend both old and new homes.
Lantern roof extensions are arguably one of the 21st Centuries most popular designs. Lanterns are the best way to create designs that maximise light and open space whilst maintaining the feel of a real room.
The structural build of a Lantern roof design is crucial. The roof should always be designed to be independent of the glazing. The glazing is only there as an aesthetic feature and to make the room weatherproof. This is achieved using stone or brick together with steel or engineered glu-lam beams and is one of the reasons correctly designed orangeries can be quite costly… but worth every penny!
Lantern roof extensions often feature an open plan design, usually extending from a kitchen with the removal of the old exterior wall(s) to form a spacious family kitchen and dining room for relaxing or entertaining with the “wow” factor.
